College Preparation

Colleges and universities generally consider students for admission by evaluating the following data:

  • College Application: Every college has its own application process and students must follow the instructions carefully for the colleges of their choice
  • Scholastic Record: A transcript of the student's academic record, senior class schedule and Pine-Richland High School profile are sent by the high school guidance office to the student's selected college(s) for evaluation
  • Admission Tests: Results of college entrance tests, such as ACT, SAT and SAT II are sent to college(s) upon request. Scores are carefully noted by admission officers. Please check with individual colleges about whether test scores need to be sent by the individual testing agency
  • Recommendations: Students gather recommendations from guidance counselors, teachers, and community members and send them to their selected colleges
  • Extracurricular: Students create a resume of their extracurricular experiences each summer to send to their selected colleges

Financial Aid

Financial aid may be awarded in several ways. It may be:
  • A scholarship
  • A grant
  • A loan from a bank or other agency
  • A part-time job

These may be the means for some students to be able to attend college. Some of the ways may provide money that has to be paid back by a prearranged method.

Students interested in financial aid should study college catalogs of their choice, discover what is available and how to apply for such aid.

Families interested in discussing sources of financial aid may set up an appointment with their school counselor or the Office of Collegiate Affairs.  It is the student's responsibility to meet deadlines regarding financial aid. Additional scholarship searches are available in the college/career center or in Naviance. 

Scholarships

Local scholarships are  available in your Family Connection by Naviance account. Please visit the website and search under "About College" > "Scholarship List" >"Local Scholarships" at http://connection.naviance.com/pinerichland for a complete listing of this year's scholarship opportunities. An electronic copy is also available in Naviance under "Document Library."

National Collegiate Athletic Association

Students who plan on participating at the collegiate level in athletics must learn about the rules that govern eligibility. If you plan on participating in Division I or Division II athletics, you must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse. Students can register by logging onto their website at www.eligibilitycenter.org

After registering as a prospective student-athlete, students should request their high school transcript be sent. The school counseling office will send their current transcript immediately to the NCAA Clearinghouse and send their final transcript after high school graduation.

Important Facts

  • Students are responsible for requesting their test scores be sent directly from College Board and/or ACT to the NCAA.
  • Scores are no longer accepted from the high school transcript.

Rules governing recruiting vary by sport and league.

  • Student-athletes are encouraged to obtain a PDF copy of the "NCAA Guide for the College Bound Athlete" by visiting the NCAA website and reading the guidelines for their sport.
  • Students with questions regarding college athletics and recruitment are encouraged to contact the athletic office and the NCAA.

College Visitation Schedule

When you visit the site for the first time:

  • Please enter your personal registration code in the "New User" box.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to create your own account.

If you do not know your registration code, please contact the counseling office for assistance.

Parents may enter the site as guests or request they be added as a parent partner to their high school student's account. Parents can contact the counseling office for the guest password. As a guest, access to information is limited, but the college visitation dates and times are listed.  Please note: students are required to have permission from their classroom teacher in order to attend these visitations. Permission forms can be found in Naviance under "Document Library" and in Mrs. Whalen's office. Parents who wish to be added as parent partners will have full access to their students account which includes GPA, test scores, college and career search tools, as well as Method Test Prep, the free online test prep course.
