Pine-Richland Junior Selected for the Rensselaer Medal
Pine-Richland High School junior Deeya Nayyar has been recognized as a Rensselaer Medal Award recipient for excellence in math and science education.
The Rensselaer Medal has been presented annually since 1916 by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to recognize superior academic achievement and to encourage students toward careers in science, engineering and technology. Pine-Richland High School is one of more than 5,000 high schools across the world that submit student nominations for this prestigious award.
As a Rensselaer Medal recipient, Deeya is now eligible to receive a $40,000 per year merit scholarship that is guaranteed for four years if she chooses to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute after graduation. Deeya was nominated for the award by her teachers, Dr. Michelle Switala and Mr. Nick Chelmu.
Deeya is a member of the Girls' Tennis team, participates in Mock Trial, is treasurer of the French Club, is a member of the National Honor Society, and plays violin in the advanced orchestra program. Deeya has also volunteered as a leadership intern for two years at Camp Invention, which supports elementary students in our area in STEM education and as a youth tennis coach.
